Hair care: Smooth, sleek locks
Hands up if you hate your frizzy hair. The Keratin wave has arrived, and fuzzy strands around Queensland are cowering beneath the super smoothing, sleeking coating Keratin treatments deliver. Oscar Oscar salons now offer this super deluxe way to get your hair in top shape before your wedding.
My hair has always attracted more than its fair share of attention. It’s very very curly, and since I got distracted having babies and forget to get regular haircuts, it’s ended up very, very long. For the past seven years I’ve only trusted Oscar Oscar master stylists to cut it. Currently, the fascinating and very talented O’Brien King at Indooroopilly is the only man other than my husband allowed to touch my hair – and certainly the only one allowed near it with sharp implements. Every 6 months or so I enjoy an hour or so of celestial debate as he waves his scissors around, resulting in a massive cloud of fluffy frizz on the floor which is discreetly swept away before I leave.
Now at my last visit O’Brien told me to ‘embrace’ my curls, and I do, I really do. The thing is, to get my curls looking good was turning into a two-day process – I literally had to style my hair the day before to get it looking right, it was that unruly. But then I heard about the new Global Keratin treatment, and so it was off to the lovely Leigh Angus – Master Colourist and Keratin expert at Oscar Oscar Carindale. The process is lengthy, initially expensive and slightly nerve-wracking. After all, I have become synonymous with my curls – but I could live without the frizz. The ladies talked me into having the stronger treatment. And they were right, for so many reasons.
Global Keratin, which originates in Brazil, is made up of the same stuff as your own hair – keratin. The magic ingredient is called Juvexin(tm), which promises to smooth, revitalise, protect and add shine. It’s basically a coating which is brushed on wet, blow dried, and then sealed with a super-hot hair iron onto every single strand. It’s not chemically based, and it doesn’t alter the internal structure of your hair cuticle. Instead, the coating slowly wears off with each wash, lasting an average of four months. You can just keep putting the treatments in, knowing it’s only benefitting your hair – and reducing your bad hair days.
There’s a few big ‘don’ts’: you can’t wash your hair after having the treatment applied for at least two days – four days is better – and you have to wait another two weeks before applying colour. So if you are planning to refresh your colour pre-wedding – do it before the Keratin treatment, not after. This will ensure a longer lasting effect, as it’s sealed into your hair. As my curls struggled in vain against this super smoothing process (you could almost hear the tendrils whinging like my two year old), I saw myself transformed into a slightly eccentric looking mad woman to, well, a bit of a glamazon really! A week later, my hair has been washed once, and straightened twice (a process which now takes one fifth of the time to complete) and I am waking up every day to absolutely beautiful, shiny, healthy looking and feeling hair.
If I leave my hair to dry naturally I have a lovely relaxed wave, and zero frizz. Really. Zero. For girls without curl, Leigh tells me the results are equally fantastic – goodbye flyaways, hello sleek hair. Absolutely every type of hair can benefit from this amazing treatment. Your wedding day hairdresser will love you for it. And on a cost-per-wear basis – well can you afford not to? There has been one complaint – my husband can’t find me in a crowd as the frizzy mop is gone. But he’s the only one complaining – and I now have a new habit to support – see you in four months Leigh!
